FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions...
Q: What is the difference between "select"
soccer and recreational soccer? A: The term
"select" comes from the process of putting a team
together by a "selection process" known as
tryouts. There are no tryouts for recreational soccer.
Select teams play other select teams and do not play
recreational teams,
Q: When are tryouts held?
A: Tryouts are held on three days in early June. Players should plan to
attend all three evenings. Sheboygan area tryouts will be
held at Horace Mann Soccer Complex.
Q: How are players evaluated at tryouts?
A: The first day, players participate in a series of drills
to highlight their individual soccer skills. On day two and
three players scrimmage to show their abilities in game
situations. All players wear a numbered tag to identify them
and their skills are recorded as that player by number not
by name.
Q: Who evaluates the players?
A: Volunteer coaches, potential coaches and experienced
players give of their time to evaluate players.
Q: How are players selected?
A: "Select" soccer is a team of players that have
been selected on the basis of performance at tryouts. These
players are not necessarily all the best players but
individuals who may compliment others to make up the best
team.
Q: How are coaches selected?
A: If more than one head coach comes forward to lead a team,
the Board of Directors of Sheboygan County United will make
that determination. This decision is based on a number of
factors, just as player selection.
Q: What is the cost for a Sheboygan County United
player?
A: The initial registration ranges from $60 per
calendar year. Other miscellaneous expenses such as uniforms, food and
transportation are the responsibility of the player and
parents. Other team and tournament fees may be covered by
fund-raising.
Q: How will select soccer prepare a player for a high
school team?
A: Being a member of a select soccer team requires
dedication from both players and parents. It is the
responsibility of the coach and the parents to keep select
soccer fun and enjoyable as well as promote excellent soccer
play. Players who enjoy participating at the advanced and
competitive level will be better prepared to play in high
school. Generally, 80% to 100% of high school soccer team
starters played select soccer. Although some select teams
play occasionally in winter and summer, sports such as
baseball, volleyball, track and basketball are commonly
played by select players with little or no conflict. Playing
select soccer does not conflict with WIAA rules.
Q: When is the soccer season?
A Youth select soccer, U-11, U-12, U-13 & U-14 is played
in spring and fall, eight games each, four at home and four
out of town The out of town games are usually within a 60
minute drive time, generally in the metro-Milwaukee area.
High school students play select soccer in the opposite
season of WIAA soccer. That is high school girls play select
in fall, boys in spring. If a player makes a team, he or she
could be practicing this summer and competing in a few
tournaments, generally 4 to 5 a year.
